First Award Fellowships

About the First Award Fellowship

The NSBRI First Award Fellowship provides support for academically talented young scientists to conduct space-related biomedical or biotechnological research that supports the Institute’s goals.

The program offers young scientists the opportunity to manage their own space-related biomedical research project while continuing to learn from an experienced faculty mentor. Participants become a part of one of NSBRI’s research teams and also receive introduction to NASA Johnson Space Center’s research facilities and program.

Eligibility

The program is open to U.S. citizens, permanent residents or persons with pre-existing visas obtained through their sponsoring institutions that permit postdoctoral training for the project’s duration. Funding is for a two-year period, with an optional third year based on merit and need, and includes an allocation for health insurance.

Application Process

NSBRI solicits applications to the First Award Program annually.  Applicants must prepare proposals with the support of a mentor, and all proposals are evaluated by a peer-review panel.

Note: As of October 2015, new applications are no longer being accepted for this program.
