Radiation Effect Symposium

2006 Radiation Symposium

Introduction / Scope

It is the intent of this workshop to review the clinical manifestations of acute and late radiation events after terrestrial exposures as well as their current medical countermeasures. One of the meeting's goals is to evaluate whether the knowledge acquired on the ground can be used for exploration-class missions in order to determine the future medical resources required to treat the effects of a radiation event, as well as to provide an adequate standard of care to exposed crewmembers.

Scope:
  1. Determine a definitition of raditation risks for human space exploration .
  2. Advance medical countermeasures for acute and latent effects.
  3. Evaluation and development of countermeasures.

Objectives:

  1. Review the development of candidate protection strategies.
  2. Discuss the molecular basis for countermeasure approaches.
  3. Present data from human studies.
  4. Identify primary candidates for future countermeausres studies.
  5. Develop collaborative approaches for futher development of countermeasures.

Goals:

  1. Recommendations for countermeasures strategies for NSBRI.
  2. Strategic plan/vision for a pathway to: develop and implement a program on
medical countermeasures for acute radiation effects.
