Baylor heads NSBRI research project

HOUSTON - The National Space Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI) has identified its initial core research program aimed towards insuring safe, long-duration space flight.

"This is a very significant first step in fulfilling the NSBRI's mission," said Dr. Bobby R. Alford, NSBRI board chairman, Baylor's executive vice president and dean of medicine and chief of otorhinolaryngology at The Methodist Hospital of Houston.

The eight research teams and team leaders are:

  • Bone Demineralization and Calcium Metabolism -- Dr. J.R. Shapiro, The Johns Hopkins University
  • Cardiovascular Alterations -- Dr. R.J. Cohen, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • Human Performance Factors, Sleep and Chronobiology -- Dr. C.A. Czeisler,
  • Harvard Medical School Immunology, Infection and Hematology -- Dr. R.B. Rudolph, Rice University
  • Muscle Alterations and Atrophy -- Dr. R.J. Schwartz, Baylor College of Medicine
  • Neurovestibular Adaptation -- Dr. C.M. Oman, MIT
  • Radiation Effects -- Dr. J.F. Dicello, The Johns Hopkins University
  • Technology Development -- Dr. V.L. Pisacane, Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab
The NSBRI leads this national effort, which supports NASA's Human Exploration and Development of Space Strategic Plan.

"The frontier of human space exploration is once again the human himself," said MIT's Dr. Laurence Young, NSBRI director. "The NSBRI research program will provide us the knowledge and tools to bring people beyond that frontier."

The NSBRI is a joint project of NASA and a consortium of U.S. academic and research facilities, headed by Baylor. Consortium members are Baylor, Harvard Medical School, The Johns Hopkins University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Morehouse School of Medicine, Rice University and Texas A&M University. The Johnson Space Center, Houston, is the NSBRI sponsor.
