CONTRATULATIONS!

We have just completed our examination of some of the important results of Dr. Baldwin's space flight investigation. These results, obtained from animal research, provide key information that should allow us to develop a better understanding of human muscle function in space and on Earth. In addition, these studies have provided some very strong hints about how to develop appropriate corrective procedures (countermeasures) of diet and exercise that would provide better health care for astronauts who fly in space and for patients here on Earth who are unable to maintain muscle integrity normally.

This chapter provides another piece of the very large picture that we are developing related to how space flight affects the human body. Let's review our familiar integrated physiology flow chart to see how our understanding of that big picture has evolved (Figure 24).

Figure 24: This flow chart illustrates once again the many connections that exist among the different space flight changes that occur in the human body. The highlighted boxes are those changes that were examined by Dr. Baldwin's experiment.

We have one final activity left in this chapter, a "Speaking of Space" activity which was designed to provide you with some experience in preparing and delivering a scientific presentation. Let's get started!
