Butterflies and Spiders in Space Space Shuttle Endeavour delivered orb spiders and Vanessa cardui (painted lady butterfly) larvae to the International Space Station on Nov. 16, 2008. The unusual cargo is part of a National Space Biomedical Research Institute funded education project designed to excite and interest students in science with space-based flight experiments suitable for classroom replication and student research. Participating schools in Colorado and Texas are taking part in a pilot study and replicating the experiments on Earth with spiders and butterfly larvae in their classrooms. Students compare the life cycles and behaviors of the space spiders and butterflies with those in the classroom habitats. The project is being conducted through a partnership between the Center for Educational Outreach at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and BioServe Space Technologies at the University of Colorado. For the latest information about the project, please visit: Butterflies and Spiders in Space.
