Transportable and Remote Medical Systems

The need for small, lightweight, transportable devices to assist with medical experiments and care on the International Space Station and on interplanetary missions can also bring health care diagnostic aids to rural clinics and nursing homes. And, high-technology scientific techniques designed to aid diagnosis and treatment on station can be immediately used in hospitals, on ambulances and in emergency rooms as well as to help further the advances in remote technologies for health care.

On Earth, devices the Institute's Smart Medical Systems and Technology Development teams are currently developing will also be used to provide mobile osteoporosis screenings at retirement communities and nursing homes; diagnostic assessments in remote areas without modern facilities; and rapid detection of bacteria in food and water. Projects exploring intranasal delivery of medications and the use of ultrasound to control internal bleeding also will impact patient care.
