Sleep DisordersConsidering people spend almost one-third of their lives sleeping, one would think we would know what it takes to get a good night's sleep. That's not the case for millions of Americans. As many as 40 million Americans are afflicted with more than 70 different types of sleep-related problems. While some sleep problems may be linked to biological changes associated with aging or certain physical diseases, others are associated with jet lag, shift work and extended work schedules, which ultimately can lead to life-threatening accidents due to sleepiness. In an effort to understand the disruption of the astronaut's circadian rhythm, the Human Performance Factors, Sleep and Chronobiology Team's research has important implications for improving the safety and well being of many people on Earth.
