From personality conflicts and work stress to depression and loneliness,
neuro-psychologists have been studying psychosocial behaviors and
interactions in an effort to assess group and individual communications
and develop remote diagnosis and assessment of psychological issues. And,
when taken out of their daily family and work life on Earth, astronauts,
who are otherwise perfectly in control, may be faced with the challenges
of isolation, loneliness and possibly depression on long-duration
missions.
NSBRI-funded researchers on the Neurobehavioral and Psychosocial Factors team are working to develop a number of devices and tools that, while designed for use on astronauts on long voyages, will also be applicable to the resolution of problems ranging from personality conflicts and work stress to depression and neurocognitive disorders. These tools also will help with remote diagnosis and assessment of patients. Projects designed to evaluate team structure and communication can be used to help groups and corporations learn to resolve conflict and build stronger teams.
