Osteoporosis and Other Bone DisordersMore than 44 million Americans have or are at risk of developing osteoporosis, according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation. In the United States today, 10 million people have the disease and another 34 million have low bone mass, placing them at an increased risk for the disease. One in two women and one in four men over age 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime. And, osteoporosis is responsible for more than 1.5 million fractures annually.Monitoring techniques and bone loss solutions being researched by the NSBRI Bone Loss Team stand to benefit thousands of patients suffering from osteoporosis and other related bone disorders. Research to date suggests both drug-based and exercise-related methods should be considered as potential solutions to bone loss.
