Consortium Members

The NSBRI consortium originally consisted of seven institutions. In September 1999, five new members were added bringing the total to 12.

The consortium members are: Baylor College of Medicine
Baylor College of Medicine, the only private medical school in the Greater Southwest, is ranked fifth among the 125 U.S. medical schools in NIH funding. The College's mission is to promote health for all people through education, research and public service. Baylor has total research support of $381 million and more than 70 research and patient-care centers. Currently, 669 medical students are enrolled at Baylor, along with 471 graduate students, 736 postdoctoral fellows, 123 allied health students and 1,007 resident physicians pursuing specialty training.

Brookhaven National Laboratory
The U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory operates major facilities for basic and applied scientific research. One of Brookhaven's particle accelerators is the only machine in the U.S. that can simulate the heavy-ion component of cosmic rays in outer space. With the goal of making manned space exploration safer, researchers use this accelerator to test how cosmic rays affect astronauts and their spacecraft.

Harvard Medical School
Harvard Medical School is one of the world's preeminent medical education and research institutions. With nearly 8,000 faculty and 17 affiliated facilities, the breadth and depth of its scientific and clinical disciplines are unsurpassed. Educational and research programs are at the core of the Medical School. The student body includes M.D. students, Ph.D. students, and students in the joint M.D./Ph.D. programs, part of which are sponsored in collaboration with MIT through the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology.

Applied Physics Laboratory: Known for its expertise in diverse fields including undersea technology, air defense systems, biomedical research, space science research and spacecraft development, the Applied Physics Laboratory has addressed complex systems problems requiring elements of basic research, concept development, and prototype design, fabrication, testing and evaluation.

Morehouse School of Medicine

Rice University
Rice University is consistently ranked one of America's best teaching and research universities. Texas A&M University

University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences - the state's only comprehensive academic health-sciences campus - provides medical training for an overwhelming majority of the state's physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals. It is a center for healthcare research and economic development through biotechnology. UAMS Medical Center is the patient-care network that combines the resources of University Hospital, Arkansas Children's Hospital, Arkansas Cancer Research Center, Harvey & Bernice Jones Eye Institute, Donald W. Reynolds Center on Aging, and seven regional clinics in Arkansas. It maintains active programs of community service in healthcare fields throughout the state.

University of Pennsylvania Health System
The University of Pennsylvania Health System can rightfully be called "the birthplace of American medicine," with the nation's first hospital, first medical school, first university hospital, and first fully-integrated academic health system. The school consistently ranks among the top 10 in U.S. News & World Report. Over the past 30 years, University of Pennsylvania physicians have participated in many important discoveries, including the development of magnetic resonance imaging and the discovery of the Philadelphia chromosome, which revolutionized cancer research by making the connection between genetic abnormalities and cancer.

University of Washington
The University of Washington's faculty includes five Nobel Prize winners, nine MacArthur Fellows and 40 National Academy of Sciences members. Its School of Medicine has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report as first in the nation in training primary-care physicians, and several of its graduate and professional programs are rated among the top 10 in their fields. Since 1975, UW has been the top public university in receipt of federal research funds, and it has been second among all U.S. universities, public and private, since 1992.
